GRUEN Watch Museum
DIETRICH GRUEN started as a watch manufacturer in 1896, with his "Safety Pinion Patent" from 1874, as a partner of the Columbus Watch Manufacturing Company, Columbus Ohio / USA. He left this company in 1894, shortly before the Columbus Watch Company fell victim to the economic panic of the 1890s. At the same time, Dietrich Gruen founded the watch manufacturing D. GRUEN & SOHN alongside his son, Fred Gruen, in 1894 in Glashütte i. Sa. From this, after his second son, Georg Gruen joined the company, it was renamed to D. GRUEN & SOEHNE in Glashütte i. Sa.
The following photos show 2 early COLUMBUS-Gruen watches, currently in our showroom:
Early COLUMBUS - GRUEN WATCH dating from ca. 1874 with serial Nr.: 587
Text in image: Columbus Watch Nr. 11519 dating from ca. 1880 with Gruen’s patented Safety Pinion
The first GRUEN watch worldwide with the brand name GRUEN was made by DIETRICH GRUEN in 1894 as GRUEN-PRECISION-Watch in Glashütte i. Sa. manufactured in the house of D. GRUEN & SON. The watch is a testament to the quality and value retention of Glashütte watches from D. GRUEN & SON - and it marks the start of the rise to the global brand GRUEN in the DIETRICH GRUEN company.
In the meantime, this Glashütte GRUEN-PRECISION watch No. 32,000 has been running as reliably and precisely as it was in 1894 for over 120 years = see our showroom and photo below
