DIETRICH GRUEN - Watch with up and down indicator

The impressive evolution of the watch brand GRUEN, active from 1894 until 1950, is the topic of this website. The iconic GRUEN watches mark intriguing milestones in the journey of ever expanding watch development throughout the first half of the 20th century.

GRUEN's activities within Europe are also given special emphasis, as these were instrumental in the brand's worldwide success throughout the early 20th century.

Upon inspection of a global map, Glashütte in Saxony (in English Glashuette) stands out as an extraordinarily vibrant and productive location pertaining to precision watchmaking.

Glashütte I. Sa. Has earned its reputation of being a place of origin for demanding, high-quality watchmaking since the 19th century. This has rendered the city's name alone, GLASHUETTE, a synonym for excellent quality in watchmaking.

The U.S. American family GRUEN's idea of establishing Glashuette I.Sa. As the manufacturing base for their global GRUEN endeavors was therefore a commercial success.

Simultaneously with the founding of D.GRUEN & SOHN in August of 1894, the company's first high-quality GRUEN watches were produced in the traditionally best Glashuette ASSMANN quality.

1894 hereby marks the origin of the watch brand GRUEN and thus the beginning of an over 100 year dynamic brand heritage – which has yet to end.
